The Ruth Lutz Cheneweth Endowed Scholarship

Purpose

The purpose of the Ruth Lutz Cheneweth Endowed Scholarship shall be to support the mission, program and activities of Southern Adventist University.

Ruth Lutz-Cheneweth, born and raised in Honduras to German missionaries, arrived at Southern Adventist University with only $30 dollars in her pocket and one suitcase. The bus from Florida to Collegedale cost $30 dollars and she wanted enough money to return if she was not accepted. Speaking little English, she was initially rejected by the admissions personnel. Distraught and crying in the hallway, she was found by a kind gentleman who was the director of student finance. He found a way to get Ruth enrolled. She was given the opportunity to work to pay off her school bill and because of this was not known by many of the students. Working as a checker on the ‘Boys line’, she met James “Ed” Cheneweth and they eventually were married. She graduated with a degree in Education and taught Biology and German in an Adventist academy. Ruth and Ed started a nursing home business in Southern California and raised 3 boys. The Lord was instrumental in guiding my Ruth to Southern Adventist University. Her journey all started at Southern with a chance visit by a kind man and through hard work, perseverance and with God’s blessings we have come full circle and want to help you begin your journey. It is in this spirit that Mark and Andrea Cheneweth started the Ruth Lutz-Cheneweth Endowed Scholarship, to offer students a helping hand.
